A rendering of a Lexus concept car

Some cars are purely functional. Others are quite beautiful but terrible to keep in good repair. Some are beautiful, luxurious, powerful, and reliable. Lexus contains these qualities and is consistently seeking to push the envelope in design. Are Lexus automobiles works of art? The news “Lexus Joins Royal College of Art for Concept Designs” more than hints at that. Let’s find out more below!

Art for Lexus Concept Designs?

The merger of automobiles with high technology has created a rapid evolution in vehicles. Lexus has helped create this push, from the very first LS 400 with a motorized, adjustable steering column, to the new LX series with advanced infotainment and safety technology (and massaging captain’s chairs). Since they’re always looking forward, it makes sense that they’ve paired with the Royal College of Art to create concepts for the world of the future. Some of these concepts may seem like science fiction but considering self-driving cars have arrived, perhaps they’re closer to science facts than we know.

  • Crucible. Powered by hydrogen, this vertical take-off and landing vehicle is designed to promote car sharing. Described as a “cross between a plant terrarium and a hot air balloon”, this vehicle is seen as the near future of personal transportation.
  • UrbanSwarm. Featuring an insect-like (in a good way) exoskeleton, this battery-electric vehicle brings mass-transportation efficiency to personal, sharable transport.
  • #Units. This unique design encourages “digital personalization and social spaces”.
