How Does Lexus DIRECT4 AWD Work?

Built for the next generation of Lexus electric and hybrid electric cars and crossovers, the DIRECT4 AWD system employs front and rear high-output electric motors to control and adjust the distribution of torque and braking power to all four wheels. The DIRECT4 AWD interface will automatically adjust the balance between front- and rear-wheel drive to adapt to road and weather conditions – using driver input to provide you with a peerless experience. With this system in place, you will have the ability to adjust torque distribution with ratios that include 100:0, 50:50 and 20:80.

The Lexus DIRECT4 AWD system is built around an innovative, next-generation DIRECT4 e-Axle design concept. Each e-Axle features its own high-torque electric motor and transaxle that allows for a singular focus on the distribution of torque and power to the wheels. The electric motors are each connected to the wheels by a single drive shaft – eliminating any delays in acceleration and steering response – which translates to an incredible drive. With a 100% electric platform, the DIRECT4 AWD system provides a quiet and comfortable ride.
