What happens if I use a lower octane than recommended?

As you might imagine, using a lower octane than your manufacturer recommends is a dangerous game. It can result in engine knocking, which after a while will cause damage to your engine. If you’ve already been guilty of this, you may want to schedule a service appointment.

What happens if I use a higher octane than recommended?

Using a higher octane-rated gas in your car won’t hurt, but it won’t help either. You’ll just be spending additional money. As opposed to what some believe, using premium gas in a vehicle that doesn’t need it will not increase mileage ratings or performance.

What is defined as premium and regular gas?

To label a fuel as premium, it should have an octane rating of 91 or higher. So, if your 2019 Lexus falls into the first category above, you should be pouring premium gasoline down its throat.
Regular fuel is defined as having an octane rating of 87. If you’re vehicle falls into the latter category, there’s no need to use premium gasoline.
