Camelback Road, Mountain and More
Phoenix drivers are likely to know Camelback Road because its east-west route takes it through so much of the metro area. Around the North Scottsdale area, the road is known for its many Camelback car dealerships. However, this 33-mile road serves many neighborhoods as it wanders through Goodyear, Glendale, Litchfield Park and more.
It was more than 150 years ago that settlers began to identify the mountain as a kneeling camel. These special peaks have been important to the area for much longer. Occupying the area until the 14th Century, the Hohokam Culture considered the mountain to be a sacred site.
Peaking at more than 2700 feet, the granite humps date back 1.5 billion years. The giant camel’s head formed out of red sedimentary sandstone that dates back 25 million years.
Outdoor Activities in Camelback
When you are in Arizona, the outdoors beckons with all kinds of surprises. Famous Camelback Mountain is a tough climb and not recommended for beginners. Parking is located at the Echo Canyon Trailhead. For less stressful adventures, there’s the Hole in the Rock hiking area or nearby Piesta Peak.
In addition, the Camelback area is close to Papago Golf Club and many other places to swing your club. Kids will love a day at the Phoenix zoo. Sports fans can enjoy a game at the Camelback Ranch in Glendale. Spring training is always exciting with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox and the whole Cactus League.

Stretching from Scottsdale to Litchfield, Camelback Road ambles through many communities including Goodyear and Glendale. Find out about the world’s most interesting plants at a living museum. The incredible Desert Botanical Garden offers five themed areas and more than 50,000 species.
