6 Ways to Compare the 2023 vs 2024 Lexus GX

The 2023 Lexus GX 460 is being replaced by the 2024 Lexus GX 550, but this is more than a name change. Completely redesigned the new Lexus GX is advertised as doing more and doing it better than the popular 2023 edition.

Apparently the goal in the redesign is to bring all elements together and combine them into a luxurious package of sophistication, capability, and versatility. This has led Lexus designers to substitute “sophisticated” for sport in the abbreviation SUV.

Is it possible to achieve more style without losing performance? Let’s take a look at the numbers and other details to find out.

  1. Powertrain Changes

The 2023 GX is powered by a 4.6-liter V8. This smart machine cranks out 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque. With the 2024 model year, the new Lexus GX can do even better. A smart twin turbo V6 increases horsepower to 349 and torque to a whopping 479 lb-ft.

This represents an increase of 48 horses and 140 lb-ft of torque. For an off-roader, that high torque rate is a big asset. It gives you more grunt at the lowest speed. Of course, it makes accelerating from 0 to 60 mph very quick, even though this is a large SUV. So that's a definite win for the 2024 GX models.

2024 GX models benefit from an all-new suspension and a new build. With these tough new underpinnings, Premium, Premium+, and Luxury models can pull up to 8,000 pounds. The Overtrail+ grade is rated similarly to the 6,500-pound towing capacity of the 2023 Lexus GX.

Coming soon, Lexus will add a new hybrid powertrain to your 2024 GX choices.

  2. Off Roading

Whether it’s the 2023 or 2024 edition, GX shoppers will appreciate standard four-wheel drive. This offers the ability to choose 4hi or 4Lo. You can rely on a center differential to assist your trail and road traction efforts.

The 2023 Luxury trim with a special package has a multi-terrain select function that is standard on the 2024 Overtrail trim and Overtrail+ trim. This system regulates wheelspin to suit the surface, including mud and loose rocks. It adjusts to assist you with desert sand, making it a good pick for our desert area.

These models have Crawl Control to help maintain your pace on the trail. It’s like cruise control for slow speeds, and all you have to do is steer. An electronic Kinetic Dynamic suspension system is made for anticipating the bumps as well as smoothing them. An electronic locking rear differential helps the SUV claim more traction in difficult terrain.

2023 Lexus GX models were the first to introduce a convenient under-vehicle camera view. It’s part of the 3D multi terrain monitor that can watch the front, rear and sides. This was retained during the Lexus GX redesign, since it is such a big favorite with adventurous drivers.

  3. Bigger and Stronger

The 2023 model is built strong and tough. This allows it to have ample off-road capability and towing prowess. However, the 2024 Lexus GX is even stronger with a new build that allows it to push the limits more safely than ever before.

Remade from the ground up, the 2024 model is built taller with tighter overhangs to allow for better ground clearance. A wider track gives it greater stability. You can expect the 2024 to be almost 4 inches wider and the GX Overtrail to be 4.5 inches wider. The wheelbase is 2.36 inches longer while the overall length is 2.75 inches longer.

This larger size allows the 2024 GX to claim more cargo space and more passenger volume than ever before. That's another win for the new model year.

  1. Style and Packaging

If you look at the 2023 and 2024 GX models side by side, you will see many differences in style and ornamentation. GX Overtrail and Overtrail+ models offer a black roof to offset one of four fun colors. Their 33-inch all terrain tires declare their intention to go looking for adventure.

The trim levels grew from 4 to 6 with the addition of the two advanced off-road models. For Phoenix AZ drivers, the standard package has the most exciting feature. You now get ventilated front seats without having to pay for a package or a higher trim.

While the 2023 GX seats are comfy, the 2024 seats allow you to go the extra mile with less fatigue. These ergonomic chairs sit you up higher and provide more support to your back and head.

On some models, the new GX offers massaging seats. These can really chip away at the stress of a long drive.

There are more fine touches, such as the illuminated charging ports and special Ultrasuede accents. Shoppers still have their choice of NuLuxe or aniline leather, but there are more color schemes for the new model year.

2024 model shoppers can enjoy new Chateau Nuluxe upholstery or go for a special saddle tan material.  Standard black can be exchanged for dapple gray or you can dress up black leather with an olive Ultrasuede interior.

  2. Entertainment Technologies

You can be sure the 2023 GX excels at entertainment and connectivity. It even has some complimentary subscriptions that allow you to utilize a remote start app, Enform navigation aids, and Enform traffic assist.

The 2024 model has a bigger touchscreen and a new digital instrument panel. There are more USB ports, and Lexus has illuminated them for fast finds at night. If you are interested in the complimentary Enform subscriptions, please check with our staff to see if they are now available with the 2024 models.

  1. Safety and Driver Aids

Like the 2023 Lexus GX, the 2024 model excels when it comes to safety. The two have ten airbags each and a long list of today’s most critical driver assistance features.

Watching the front, sides and rear, the 2023 driver assistance is extremely thorough. For front end dangers, it includes a collision warning, emergency autobrake, pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control. For side dangers, it includes a watch on the blind spot and lane lines. For parking it has a rearview camera, available panoramic camera and a rear cross traffic alert.

The 2024 Lexus GX adds more tools, including a Road Sign Assist and Lane Tracing Assist. It also has the semi-automated Proactive Driving Assist as a valuable standard.

If you are interested in complimentary Safety Connect, please check with our staff. It should be available on the 2024 GX. We can only be sure, at this time, that it is a standard on the 2023.

Conclusion

If you have the flexibility, we definitely encourage you to aim for the 2024 and its complete redesign. However, you really can’t go wrong with the 2023 or 2024 Lexus GX.
